Major All-Stars, Babe Ruth 15s also drop out of tourney play.
The Bainbridge 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars dominated everyone they faced at the 9/10 softball state tournament in Auburn last week.
That is, until they ran into an equally tough team in District 1’s Stilly Valley.
Bainbridge gave them all they could handle, but couldn’t close it out as they lost to Stilly Valley 7-3 Saturday in the final championship game to finish second in the tournament.
Erin Kinney put Bainbridge on the board first as she drove in Katie Raben with a base hit in the first inning.
Stilly Valley responded with three runs in their half of the frame, but Antonia Papajani made a nice defensive play and pitcher Faith Campbell struck out two to keep them from scoring more.
But Stilly Valley scored three more runs in the second and one more in the third to put them up for good.
The All-Stars almost started a rally in the fourth when Leah Nordberg singled and stole second.
After the Stilly Valley pitcher retired the next two batters, Raben singled to right to try to score Nordberg, but she was thrown out at third.
In the fifth, Kinney doubled and eventually scored on a Papajani single, but that’s all Bainbridge could muster against Stilly Valley.
It was a much closer game in the first championship game between the two teams on Friday night, as Raben went the entire six innings for the win.
She struck out six and walked seven, yet gave up only one run.
Kinney drove in Emily Schneider for the first run of the game for Bainbridge, but Stilly Valley tied the game with a run in the fifth.
In the sixth, Campbell singled, then Kinney drove her in with a triple for the game-winning run.
The two teams met for the first time Wednesday, as Stilly Valley defeated Bainbridge 11-7.
In a back and forth game, the All-Stars banged out 12 hits, but couldn’t keep Stilly Valley off the board.
Campbell had three singles and an inside-the-park home run, while Kinney had a triple and Schneider and Papajani each doubled.
In the first two games, Bainbridge held their opponents to one run, as they defeated Columbia 16-0 and Sammamish 27-1 in four innings.
Raben, Schneider, Campbell, Kinney, Maddy Stevenson, Papajani and Leah Nordberg hit a double against Columbia, while Katie Raben and Emily Schnieder were 5 for 5 against Sammamish
Bainbridge also had 33 hits against Sammamish, as Campbell went 5 for 6 and had a double and two triples.
Papajani also tripled as Stevenson, Kayla Estes, Tara Wilford, Nordberg and Maureen McCormick also doubled.
Raben and Campbell combined for a one-hitter against Columbia while Campbell and Estes combined for a no-hitter against Sammamish.
The Major All-Stars played tough, but lost two straight to Woodinville and Lewis River at the state tournament in Chehalis last week.
Annalise Ricco and Natalie Najarian batted 1.000 in both those games while Hailey Willmann and Tristin Berge perfomed well in the circle.
And with 10 players from this year’s team eligible to return next year, head coach Troy Greenfield feels they’ll be right back in the state tournament next year.
The Bainbridge Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars started the state tournament off well with a 6-0 win over host North Kitsap last Thursday, but lost 15-7 to Ellensburg on Friday, 5-3 to Mount Vernon on Saturday and 13-3 to Moses Lake on Sunday, eliminating them from the tournament.
Spencer Eager was named the MVP in the North Kitsap game.
