Spartan girls top Vikings, boys team falls short

Playing their first Metro opponent on their home court, the Spartan girls triumphed over Rainier Beach 57-34 Friday.

Leading by just three points at the half, the Spartans (1-1 in the Metro, 2-3 overall) outscored the Vikings (0-2 in the Metro) 16-2 in the third quarter, and 27-15 in the fourth.

The Spartans had three players in double digits, Hannah Depew with 15, Morgan Moniz scored 13 and Grace Kenyon added 11.

Rebecca Sharar posted a team-high 11 rebounds and three assists.

Bainbridge will take on Ingraham at 7 p.m. Wednesday at home.

Boys basketball

The Bainbridge boys team fell to top-ranked Rainier Beach 63-40 Friday.

The Spartans (1-1 in the Metro, 3-1 overall) turned the ball over on their first three possessions, trailing 4-0 before Will DiIorio ignited an 11-2 scoring run with a three pointer.

The teams traded baskets in the second quarter, but the Vikings (2-0 in the Metro) quickly gained control as the Spartans struggled to break the full-court press.

Rainier Beach regained the lead when guard Hikeem Stewart converted on two free throws, 16-15.

The Spartans got within two points on a Michael Stevenson lay-up, 23-21, but would trail the rest of the game as Rainier Beach’s defense only allowed 19 second-half points, forcing 31 turnovers on the night.

Bainbridge shot 36 percent from the field, and were one-of-six from behind the arc.

Ryan Burris led the Spartans with 14 points on six-for-14 shooting, and six rebounds. DiIorio added nine points and was four-of-eight from the field.

Rainier Beach guard Kadeem Stewart scored a team-high 15, and was two-of-three with the three ball. Stewart posted 14, on six-for-12 shooting.

Next up, the Spartans host Ingraham at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
