Shorelines of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap were under a no-contact advisory through Wednesday due to a sewage spill across the waters in Seattle.

A shellfish harvesting advisory is also in effect, through May 19. Go to doh.wa.gov/shellfishsafety for details.

The affected areas are the east shoreline of Bainbridge Island, from Yeomalt Point to Agate Pass Bridge; and the North Kitsap shoreline from Agate Pass Bridge to Point Jefferson. Signs will be posted at public access points in the affected area.

During a no-contact advisory, the public is advised to avoid contact with the water. That means the health district recommends against swimming, wading or types of water recreation or play where water could be swallowed or get in the mouth, nose or eyes. People should also avoid direct skin contact and immediately wash with soap and water if they have exposure to the water.

Extensive power outages caused overflows last week at King County Wastewater Treatment Division’s West Point Treatment Plant. Pumping stations shut down, spilling an estimated 11 million gallons into Puget Sound. About 80% was rainwater and 20% sewage.
