Schools survey BI about equity

The Bainbridge Island School District is asking the community to respond to a survey regarding Race, Equity and Identity.

The survey asks basic questions like race and ethnicity, but then gets into other areas not as common, such as gender identity – including transgender and agender – and sexual orientation – such as asexual and bisexual.

It then asks for feedback on four sections of the policy.

The opening section discusses that the BISD wants to nurture every student and that it acknowledges institutional racism. It says it is committed to working until race is no longer a predictor of student outcome and that it’s unacceptable that opportunity gaps exist because of historic and current racism.

In what is called Section 1 it seeks comment on what it calls “Ensure Systemic Equity.” It mentions Family, Student and Community Engagement, adding it will support inclusion for all stakeholders. It also mentions Leadership, saying they will ensure that racial equity guides employee actions and leads to improved academic results. They plan to review policies, employ a diverse workforce and more. The third area under that section is called “Teaching and Learning.” It says it will raise the opportunity and achievement of all students; provide equitable access to curriculum; provide multiple pathways to success; and more.

In Section 2, “Eliminate Systemic Disparities,” the district seeks feedback on things like discipline of particular student groups; enrichment programs for certain groups; and more.

In Section 3, “Implementation and Accountability,” the district seeks feedback on the superintendent providing an annual report to the community and school board on improvement plan goals. An equity lens will be applied. Staff will be responsible for speaking out when those equity goals are not met.
