Sign-ups have started for the next training session for Beach Naturalists.

Beach Naturalist volunteers explore Kitsap beaches and learn about marine life and local water issues. They receive extensive in-class and on the beach training and, in return, give back to the community through a variety of volunteer projects.

This year’s training begins March 28.

During training, volunteers learn about sea life such as crabs, clams, salmon, seaweed and invertebrates. They also learn about nearshore habitats and how to protect them.

The training includes outdoor field trips to Manchester State Park, the Bainbridge ferry pier, Silverdale Waterfront Park, Foulweather Bluff Nature Preserve, Scenic Beach State Park and Kitsap Memorial State Park.

After the training, Beach Naturalists choose among a variety of volunteer projects, including participating in and conducting beach explorations and providing information to the community at local fairs and events. They commit to at least 25 volunteer hours during the year.

“Every year, our volunteers give back more than 6,000 hours of service in Kitsap County,” said Peg Tillery, Beach Naturalist program educator with the Washington State University-Kitsap County Extension. “They really make a difference in protecting Puget Sound through education, research and stewardship.”

Adults and teens are welcome to attend the Beach Naturalist classes.

Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays March 28 through April 25 at the Poulsbo Marine Science Center. The cost for the six-week training session is $60. Scholarships are available.
