An island resident contacted Bainbridge Island police after finding several pieces of mail and two checks in a ditch along County Park Road and West Port Madison.

According to a police report, the incident was the latest in a string of mail thefts in various parts of the island.

Earlier this month, park district officials contacted police after finding a large plastic bag full of mail at Eagledale Park. The plastic bag contained mail that had been sent to at least 59 different homes from Bainbridge to as far as Bremerton.

In the second reported incident, an island resident told officers he had been walking his dog in the early morning hours Wednesday, Nov. 13 when he came across the mail and checks in a ditch.

He collected the mail items and contacted the owner of the checks directly.

The following day, he turned the mail into police and said he had arranged to deliver the checks.

He also told police that no one lives at the address listed on the mail.

The mail consisted of a greeting card, a solicitation and a bank statement. They were all addressed to the same woman at a residence not far from the ditch where the mail was found.

Officers went to the address and found the mailbox on what looked to be part of the city park just west of the address.

According to police reports, there was an abundance of litter and junk mail around the mailbox. There was nothing left of any value.

There are no suspects at this time, and the recovered mail has been placed into evidence.
