Police can’t chase but helicopter can

Woman was going up to 123 mph, but couldn’t escape

A 35-year-old Bremerton woman who knew she couldn’t be chased by police was arrested thanks to the State Patrol helicopter tracking her.

When captured she asked, “What about the no chase law?”

The officer said no police chased her, and instead pointed to the Smokey 3 chopper circling overhead.

She was charged with attempting to elude. Bremerton police clocked her going 100 miles per hour through a 45 mph construction zone around 8:30 p.m. April 29. She took off and was going up to 123 mph on Highway 3.

The helicopter officers told police she was hiding in a parking lot at Kitsap Mall, but when they closed in she took off again. She then tried to hide in a residential neighborhood, but when police closed in she fled.

She made her way back to Bremerton, parked the vehicle near Marine Drive and Dora Road, and fled on foot, hiding in some woods. That’s where she was apprehended.

In Kitsap County Superior Court May 1 bail was set at $70,000. If convicted, the maximum sentence is five years and a $10,000 fine.

Stolen vehicle

A 39-year-old Tacoma man was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle May 1 in Superior Court.

Bail was set at $100,000. If convicted he faces 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine maximum.

Bremerton police pulled the man over April 30 around 2:40 a.m.

The man said a friend picked him up, then was dropped off at a nearby apartment. He went and got gas. Police, however, saw the ignition key cylinder hanging by a wire and a screwdriver on the floor.
