MAY 24

2:56 p.m. Police responded to a Winslow Way store where two juvenile females were being held for shoplifting. A store owner advised police that she had seen the pair inspecting coin purses in her shop, and noticed one of the purses missing when they left. She confronted the girls in a nearby store and recovered the purse along with a bag they were carrying containing goods from other stores. Police determined that the girls had shoplifted a total of $180 in goods from three stores. One girl said she had stolen the items because she had been bullied at school and said stealing was the cool thing to do. The other said she stole the goods because she couldn’t afford nice things. The girls were released to a parent and the case was forwarded to juvenile prosecutors.

10:26 p.m. Police contacted a man at Waterfront Park who had reported his bicycle stolen. The victim said he took a bathroom break while drinking with a group of men and returned from the restroom to find his silver and red Mongoose mountain bike gone. An officer located the bicycle in the bushes and returned it to the man.

MAY 25

8:43 a.m. An officer stopped a Honda Prelude on Arrow Point Drive after a a records check showed its owner had a suspended license. The driver said the car belonged to his brother. He could not produce ID but was adamant that he had a valid license. A records check, however, showed that his driver’s license was suspended for an unpaid ticket. The man was placed under arrest, and the officer asked him if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. The driver said there was a pipe in the passenger area of the car, but no marijuana because he had smoked it the day before. The officer found a glass bong in a bag on the floorboard. The driver’s brother arrived on the scene driving a Volkswagen, but the officer found that his license was also expired. He was arrested and placed in the squad car with his brother. Both brothers were cited for driving while suspended, and the first for possession of paraphernalia.

1:02 p.m. Items valued at $450 were reported stolen from a Subaru Legacy parked in the lower lot at Bainbridge High School. The driver said she parked the car there on May 23 and returned on May 24 to find the car unlocked and a radio faceplate and digital camera missing. There was no damage done to the vehicle. No suspects.

2:12 p.m. A Pleasant Beach Drive resident reported a burglary from the day before. She said she had been in her backyard from 5 to 6 p.m. and hadn’t noticed anything unusual when she went back inside. But the next day she was preparing to run errands and discovered her purse missing. She said she had locked her doors and windows that night and was sure the burglary had occurred while she was gardening. Her purse contained $250 in cash and various ID and bank cards. No suspects.

MAY 26

12:24 p.m. Someone used gold paint to write “Take this fence down, please” on a wooden perimeter fence at Battle Point Park. A park employee said he suspects the vandal was upset because the fence blocks traffic from one side of the park. Damage was valued at $1,000.

1:54 p.m. Four vehicles were involved in a fender-bender on northbound SR-305 at Sportsman Club Road. A Kirkland driver in a Hyundai Elentra said he jammed on his brakes too late for stopped traffic and rear-ended the car in front of him. A Honda Civic traveling behind the Hyundai then braked sharply and was hit from behind by a GMC Yukon, causing the Honda to plow into the Hyudai. No injuries were reported; no citations issued.

3:01 p.m. A Madison Avenue resident reported that two small steers, one black and the other white with black spots, had wandered into his yard. When police arrived the steers were tied to a tree in the resident’s yard. The steers were trailered to another residence. The owner was eventually contacted and said he would pick up his livestock the next day.

6:03 p.m. Police, fire and aid responded to a Fletcher Bay Road residence where a 4-year-old had been bitten by the family dog. The toddler had suffered puncture wounds to the arm and head. The toddler had apparently grabbed the 1-year-old mastiff from behind while it was eating, causing the dog to attack. The child was transported to Harborview Medical Center and Animal Control was contacted.

10:15 p.m. An employee of a Madison Avenue business said he left work and found the rear window of his Mitsubishi Eclipse broken out. Nothing was missing and there was no evidence of how the window was broken. No suspects.

MAY 27

8:13 a.m. An employee of a Blakely Avenue school reported that sometime over the weekend vandals had used black spray paint to send a message to a teacher. The message, painted on the back of a portable building, read in part: “…remember ‘Homework Hut’? We wrote it! Class of 2012.” Repairs were estimated at $1,000.

11:31 a.m. A Sunrise Drive resident reported a possible burglary attempt from May 25. She said that shortly after midnight she heard voices at the rear door of her residence and thumping noises at a side door. She turned on her lights and opened the door but saw no one. The next morning she found that one window screen in the rear of the house had been partially removed and the window screen to her daughter’s bedroom fully removed. The daughter had been staying with her boyfriend and there were no vehicles in the driveway at the time. No suspects.

11:36 a.m. Fraud was reported by a Bainbridge resident. She said she was notified by her bank that someone had attempted to use her credit card to make a $1,500 purchase at Rock Creek Outfitters in Colorado. The transaction was not processed.

12:28 p.m. A resident of Sunset Avenue reported that an eight-foot cave had been dug into the bank of his waterfront property sometime in the last several weeks. He said there was a large tree above the cave, and he was concerned that it would collapse. He added that he often finds litter and cans in the area and believes it may be used for parties. No suspects.

12:59 p.m. A citizen found a bag of items in a tree in the Diamond Parking lot off Winslow. An officer inspected the bag’s contents and found copies of a traffic ticket, documents for two cars registered in Allyn, Wash., photographs, birthday cards, compact discs and a small wooden penis. A letter was sent to the address found on the documents. The items were placed in evidence.

3:40 p.m. A driver failed to brake for stopped traffic at the intersection of SR-305 and Madison Avenue, causing a three-car fender-bender. The causing driver was cited for inattention.

MAY 28

12:26 p.m. A caregiver at a Winslow Way business reported being shoved by a woman who had come to clean a donut machine. The caregiver said she had asked the woman to clean the donut machine another time because her presence was disrupting one of her clients. The caregiver said the woman then became angry and shoved her with both hands. The caregiver did not fall down and was not injured. Officers contacted the suspect who said she had felt threatened and had merely used both hands to move the caregiver out of her way. Both women were asked to record statements.

4:34 p.m. A VW Beetle driven by a Bainbridge woman rearended a commercial flatbed truck stopped for traffic on the Agate Pass bridge. The VW was towed from the scene.

4:51 p.m. A Bainbridge High School student reported that his $300 Yamaha saxophone was stolen from the band room. He said he had stored the instrument in the band room two weeks before. No suspects.

MAY 29

1:22 p.m. A citizen turned in a small black coin purse found along Ferncliff Road. The purse was empty, and police placed it in evidence.

3:28 p.m. A Bainbridge woman in a Subaru Forester rearended a Dodge Caravan stopped at Grow Avenue on High School Road. The driver said said she had attempted to brake for traffic but had hit the gas pedal instead. She was cited for following too close.

MAY 31

8:11 p.m. An officer parked on Miller Road observed the driver of a Toyota Camry light a glass pipe as he passed. The driver was the vehicle’s sole occupant and was driving with no hands while he lit the pipe. The car was stopped and the driver was smoking a cigarette by the time the officer contacted him. The officer asked for the pipe and the driver retrieved the still-smoking paraphernalia it from a pile of clothes on the passenger seat. The man did not appear under the influence. His information was recorded for possible charging and the pipe was placed in evidence. .

JUNE 1

4:53 a.m. A Toyota Camry was stopped on SR-305 after passing a slow-moving truck in a no-passing zone. The driver was contacted but told the officer that he didn’t have a driver’s license. The man was in an Army uniform and said he was catching a ferry to get to his duty station in Everett. A records check showed the man’s license was suspended and he was asked to step from the vehicle. “Are you really going to (expletive) arrest me?” the man said. The man was arrested and cited for passing in a no passing zone and driving while suspended.

6:34 a.m. A Camas woman was stopped on Olympic Drive and cited for driving while suspended and for failure to provide proof of insurance. She was booked and released.
