PO motorcyclist dies; suspect charged with vehicular homicide

A Port Orchard motorcyclist was killed June 11 after police say he was hit head-on by a vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic.

The accident took place on Highway 3 west of Fair Harbor in Mason County at 5:06 p.m. A memo from the Washington State Patrol said a 34-year-old Allyn man was driving in the southbound lane before suddenly crossing into the other side of the road. The driver hit the victim head-on, sending him and his motorcycle in different directions, the memo says. The driver’s vehicle rolled on its top and came to rest in the northbound ditch.

The victim, identified as 35-year-old Kenneth M. Speers of Port Orchard, died at the scene.

The suspect was transported to Mason General Hospital for treatment before being booked into the county jail on a charge of vehicular homicide. Police alleged that drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the deadly collision.
