One hurt in Highway 305 rollover

Police closed Highway 305 between High School Road and Winslow Way after a two-car rollover accident Tuesday afternoon.

Police closed Highway 305 between High School Road and Winslow Way after a two-car rollover accident Tuesday afternoon.

Details on the crash, which happened just before 3 p.m. near Vineyard Lane, were initially sparse.

Police and firefighters from the Bainbridge Island Fire Department were busy working at the scene; both drivers were delicately pulled from their vehicles and prepped for medical transport.

The crash left one car upside down near the center of the highway in the northbound lane.

The driver of the other vehicle went off the roadway near Vineyard Lane, and firefighters removed the driver through the back end of the vehicle and placed the driver on a backboard before carrying the crash victim to a waiting aid car.

Responding firefighters blocked the highway on the north end of the crash site by pulling a fire engine across all lanes of the highway. Crews at the High School Road and Winslow Way intersections with Highway 305 halted all traffic on the island’s main thoroughfare a few minutes later.

The sudden closure left many drivers stranded between police and fire rigs, including more than 10 vehicles, a Kitsap Transit bus and a school bus.

Some drivers near the crash scene said they did not see the accident, but came upon the crash shortly after it happened.

Stranded drivers were eventually allowed to make U-turns on the highway and leave the scene of the accident.

Just before 3:30 p.m., the fire department reported that one person in the crash was being transported.
