Bainbridge Island students will get a chance to completely enjoy the Labor Day holiday next year.

The next school year will begin Wednesday, Sept. 4.

That’s a change from the current school year, which started the week before Labor Day on Wednesday, Aug. 29.

The earlier-than-usual start prompted a few complaints from parents. The school board for the Bainbridge Island School District decided at its last meeting, however, to go back to the traditional, post-Labor Day start to the school year.

The school year calendar is set each year by the board after input from representatives from the district’s unions and parent-teachers organizations on the island.

“The board was just very supportive of this particular proposal,” said district spokeswoman Pam Keyes.

Winter break for the coming school year will be from Dec. 23, 2013 through Jan. 3, 2014. (The last day of school before winter break is Friday, Dec. 20, and classes resume on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014.)

The mid-winter break is Feb. 17 through Feb. 21, 2014. (The last day of classes before mid-winter break is Friday, Feb. 14, and classes start back up Monday, Feb. 24, 2014.)

It will be the second year in a row for a week-long February break. District officials said the longer break is better for student learning than the previous approach of two shortened weeks on either side of President’s Day.

Spring break is scheduled for March 31 through April 4, 2014. (The last day of school before spring break is Friday, March 28, 2014. Classes resume on Monday, April 7, 2014.)

Early-release Mondays will continue in the coming school year, with classes ending 90 minutes early for staff training.

According to the approved calendar for the next school year, the last day of school will be Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Make-up days, if needed, are June 18, 19 and 20.

Graduation at Bainbridge High is set for Saturday, June 14, 2014.
