It’s a night for islanders to take part in their town’s safety, and get to know the people behind the badges that serve them.

Bainbridge Island’s extension of National Night Out will take place at the town square next to city hall from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7.

National Night Out is an evening of crime and safety awareness organized locally by the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

The event drew more than 37 million people last year across 15,110 communities all over the world ranging from towns, civic groups and even military bases.

The event aims to bring the community closer together to prevent crimes and raise awareness of local law enforcement. It also educates the public about local anti-crime programs and in the end, introduce islanders to their neighbors.

“Don’t miss this great family opportunity to learn more about crime prevention, meet some of our law enforcement officers, and strengthen our collaborative efforts against crime,” said Lt. Phil Hawkins of the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

Free hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and ice cream will be offered. More than 20 booths will be set up by local businesses and nonprofits.

Island police and fire departments will bring a little extra intrigue to the event this year. The Bainbridge Island Fire Department will have its ladder truck present along with an ambulance.

The police department plans to bring along its boat that they deploy for marine emergencies around the island.
