The Bainbridge Island Police Department is inviting islanders to come celebrate the 32nd annual National Night Out, which returns this year to city hall’s Town Square, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The event takes place annually on the first Tuesday in August to heighten awareness and strengthen local anti-crime efforts. The entire family friendly event is free and open to the public, with food and activities for all ages.

Children attending the event will have the opportunity to play games, meet the department’s officers, and see inside a police car, an ambulance, a fire vehicle and a police boat. Adults will be able to enjoy music, gather crime and drug prevention materials, and attend a Neighborhood Watch meeting at 5:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. inside city hall.

Organizers said one of the highlights of the evening will be a chance to throw a pie at Chief of Police Matthew Hamner.

“Don’t miss this great family opportunity to learn more about crime prevention, meet the officers that serve you, and have some fun!” Hamner said.

Support for National Night Out is provided by local merchants and nonprofit organizations. Residents who can’t attend can still participate by leaving their front porch light on, which is a hallmark of the event.
