American Legion Post 172 will sponsor two Memorial Day Services on Monday, May 30.

The first, held at the Veterans Memorial at Bainbridge High School, will take place at 10:45 a.m. as Legionnaires, Auxiliary and local veterans honor the dead, remember the cause for which they fought and affirm trust in the future. Individual members will decorate the area surrounding the monument with flags and flowers following a brief service.

Immediately following this event, all are invited to proceed to the post hall located at 7880 NE Bucklin Hill Road for a program beginning at 11:20 a.m. featuring Father Joseph P. Mitchell, the pastor of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and a Navy veteran, as the guest speaker. Refreshments will be provided.

To conclude the day’s activities, an honor guard from the post-sponsored Boy Scout Troop 1564 will raise the Post flag at noon from half staff to full staff.

On the morning of Saturday, May 28, Legionnaires will also decorate the graves of all known veterans with flags at the five Bainbridge Island cemeteries plus the St. Barnabas and the Bethany Lutheran columbarium.

The flags will be removed the evening of Monday, May 30, after families have had a chance to remember their loved ones.
