A Bainbridge Island man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for second-degree rape.

Island resident Jaime Silva-Arroyo was sentenced Sept. 20 after he pled guilty to one count of rape in the second degree.

Silva-Arroyo was arrested July 2012 after sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman who was walking home from Safeway.

Police said Silva-Arroyo followed the woman after she left Safeway. The woman told police that he grabbed her arm as she approached Ihland Way and Madison Avenue.

The woman broke away, crossed Madison Avenue and onto a gravel trail.

Silva-Arroyo continued his pursuit and then knocked the woman to the ground, got on top of her and attempted to remove her pants while holding her down by the neck.

A struggle ensued until the woman bit two of his fingers and he fled.

The woman later identified Silva-Arroyo as the assailant to police.
