Laptop computers and prescription drugs were reported stolen from the Commodore building over the weekend.
A custodian reported the thefts Saturday morning, after finding interior doors and windows broken to gain entry to offices and classrooms, according to police reports.
How thieves entered the building was unknown, as there was no sign of forced entry. Speculation centered on unauthorized use of a building key, or security problems that come with late access by community groups.
“Because these groups are in there at odd hours, someone could have walked in and hidden out in the bathroom until they left,”
Bainbridge Police Officer Steve Cain said.
The prescription drugs belonged to students and were taken from the school nurse’s office.
The thefts were just part of a weekend marked by pranks and vandalism around the island.
Two ornamental cement lions said to weigh several hundred pounds each were carted off from the driveway of an Arrow Point home, and eggs left on the pedestals from which they were stolen. The lions were later found near Winslow.
Also, a Seaborn Road residence was struck with eggs and paintballs, while “presto” logs were stolen from outside Safeway and used to bash mailboxes and smash the back window of a parked car on Grow Avenue.

***Big tree sale
this weekend
Help beautify our community! The City of Bainbridge Island is hosting a tree sale, 9 a.m. to noon March 8 in the town square next to city hall.
A variety of native trees and shrubs obtained from the Kitsap Conservation District will be sold at cost. Plants are bare-root seedlings, and will be sold in bundles of 10.

***Foundation calls nonprofits
The Bainbridge Foundation is currently accepting applications from nonprofit agencies interested in participating in the 2003 “One Call for All” campaign.
Now in its fifth decade, the annual islandwide fund-raiser, with its signature red envelope, raised some $550,000 in 2002 for 81 area organizations.
To be eligible to participate in the drive, organizations must have 501(c)3 status with the IRS and be currently registered with the Secretary of State. Although the organization does not have to be based on Bainbridge, it must serve island residents in some capacity.
When participating in the “One Call For All” mailing, agencies agree not to conduct separate, islandwide fund-raising campaigns.
To request an application, contact Karen Wilson at the Bainbridge Foundation, 842-0659. The deadline for submitting all materials is April 15.
