On a bitterly cold evening, the squad heats up for a decisive 15-4 victory at home.

Not fooling around, the Bainbridge boys lacrosse team took control of their league match against visiting Nathan Hale Friday, cruising to a commanding 15-4 win over the Raiders to close out play before the spring break.

“Our next game is against Issaquah,” a tough opponent, coach Jack Visco said. “So it’s good to go into the break with a solid showing.”

The Spartans, with a 3-1 record and one game behind Garfield in the Sound Division, will regroup with one practice before traveling April 12 to the team that is tied with Mercer Island at the top of the Mountain Division with a 4-0 record.

They hope to build on a three-game winning streak and Friday’s quadruple hat-trick performance that combined a steady offense with a resilient, focused defense.

The Spartans were sparked by David Vander Hoek, who displayed a complete game, balancing eight assists with three goals and two ground balls.

Dylan Masi led with four goals and five ground balls, while Zach Smith and Willy Delius had three goals each. Smith led in the dirty work category, scooping up seven ground balls.

Visco was pleased with the way the team is spreading it around.

“I liked the sharp ball movement,” he said. “Anytime you get four hat tricks and everyone involved, it’s good.”

The other goals came from Ryan van den Meerendonk and freshman Garrett Lund, who also chipped in an assist and two ground balls.

Bainbridge also tightened up on the defensive end, keeping the Raiders off starting keeper John Campbell.

Campbell faced 11 shots, saving seven on the evening.

Nathan Hale hit the post four times, including an Alex Lasnik shot that bounced off the left iron on an open breakaway to end the first quarter with the Spartans leading 4-0.

After creating four of the first seven Bainbridge goals, Vander Hoek went solo for a spectacular goal to make it 8-0 with three minutes left in the first half. He worked through the defenders for an opening, then with a jump and a spin, shot from overhead to slice the ball past Hale keeper Bart Bangert.

“That’s why we call him Achilles,” said injured midfielder Fiori Alailima, referring to Brad Pitt’s leaping Greek warrior in the film “Troy.”

Lasnik scored the first of his three goals for Nathan Hale with half-a-minute left in the first half, putting the score at 9-1.

But Bainbridge peppered the opponents cage with more than 50 shots, keeping Nathan Hale on their heels throughout. But it was the defensive end where improvement was most marked.

The Spartans shut out the Raiders’ leading scorer, Alex Springer, who drew metal twice and had a breakaway swatted by Campbell from point-blank range.

“We continue to get better,” Visco said. “And it’s just in time as we next face one of the best in league in Issaquah.”

Bainbridge next hosts Seattle Prep April 13 at 7:30 p.m. before completing a five-games-in-seven-days stretch April 18, with their return match at Nathan Hale.
