The couple met while Hal was serving in the Army during the Korean War, and were married at Fort Gordon, Georgia on Aug. 11, 1956.

Hal worked in advertising and marketing communications with General Electric, Honeywell and Texas Instruments, which took the couple to many places in the U.S. and around the world.

Brenda pursued a career in art, participating in many exhibitions, including one-woman shows in Nice and Cannes while the Malareks lived in France.

Hal retired from Texas Instruments in 1996 and they moved from his last assignment, in Austin, Texas, to Bainbridge Island, where they presently reside.
