Police handed out 75 tickets during the recent crackdown on unbuckled and distracted drivers in Kitsap County.

Extra law enforcement patrols were added between May 20 and June 2 to search for drivers who were texting or talking on their cell phones, and for people on the road who were not using seatbelts.

A total of 59 tickets were issued for seatbelt infractions, and 16 tickets were handed out for cell phone/texting or usage of other electronic device tickets.

Last year, similar patrols in Kitsap County resulted in 96 seatbelt infractions and 10 cell phone violations.

Authorities said the extra patrols also netted one DUI and two felony drug arrests. Officers also issued 73 speeding tickets and two child passenger safety infractions. Police also stopped 23 uninsured motorists and nine drivers with suspended/revoked licenses.

Statewide, law enforcement officers wrote 2,321 seatbelt violations and 1,448 cell phone/texting tickets during the patrols. Last year, during this same time period, officers on the extra patrols statewide issued 3,171 seatbelt violations and 1,059 cell phone violations.

The extra patrols were conducted by the Kitsap County Target Zero Task Force and law enforcement from Kitsap County, including the Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Port Orchard and Poulsbo police departments, and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol.

The added patrols were funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission as part of Target Zero, an effort to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington by 2030.
