Dorothy Harriet Thorne, 95, of Bainbridge Island, passed away peacefully Feb. 28, 2016, in the presence of her loving husband of 74 years, Robert, and her son David.

She was born in Walla Walla on Aug. 12, 1920 to Arthur E. Cox and Harriet E. Cox. Dorothy attended Washington State College in Pullman (now WSU) where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

Before moving to Bainbridge Island in 2009, Robert and Dodi, as he called her, lived on Mercer Island for 37 years, wintering in Arizona for 16 of those years. Dorothy worked for the Social Security Administration and later as an administrative assistant to the director of the Small Business Administration in Seattle.

She loved traveling with Robert, and they took numerous long road trips, several cruises, and three trips to Europe.

Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her family for, among many other things, the beautiful afghans she knitted for them, the many sumptuous dinners for large family gatherings she loved to prepare (she became an excellent no-recipe cook while cooking at her mother’s side for the harvest crews as a teenager), and for the devoted companionship she gave to Robert for so many years of happy marriage.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, and her son, David (Kathleen), both of Bainbridge Island; her daughter-in-law Lorene Thorne of Woodinville; her sister, Carol Spicer of Roseburg, Oregon; her grandchildren, John Thorne, Ned Thorne, Kristina Krall and Sarah Kimball (Brice); and two great-grandchildren, two cousins, two nephews and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert S. Thorne Jr.

After a graveside service with family, Dorothy was buried on March 3 at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Bellevue. The Very Rev. Fr. Gary Wulf of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Redmond, officiated.
