It was a joyful and misty eyed city council meeting Wednesday evening as the council said farewell to some members while also welcoming the newly elected.

Council Members Kim Brackett, Hilary Franz, Bill Knobloch and Barry Peters performed their final duties as representatives of their community at the meeting.

Each exiting member received a certificate of appreciation and an orchid for their service.

“It is a blessing to serve this community,” Franz said. “You guys are the most passionate, committed community I have ever seen.”

Knobloch leaves his seat holding the record of being the longest acting city council member in the the city’s history. He presented supportive community members with bouquets of flowers, including his wife who got roses.

Barry Peters noted that as he considers what to do next, he will take a much needed vacation with his wife.

“I will be spending time with family and continue to participate in a number of issues involving the environment and transportation,” Brackett said.  “I also will continue to be an advocate for our most vulnerable citizens to ensure their services and safety net remain intact.”

Council Member elects Anne Blair, Sarah Blossom, Steve Bonkowski and David Ward were sworn in during Wednesday’s meeting but won’t be officially taking on their roles until Jan. 1, 2012.
