A Stage 1 burn ban is now in effect for Kitsap, King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, which prohibits the use of fireplaces and uncertified wood stoves until air quality improves.

To protect residents from worsening air quality, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issued the ban at 4 p.m. Wednesday until further notice.

High pressure over the Puget Sound region is expected to bring cold temperatures and calm winds, causing air quality to deteriorate at least through Friday, especially in communities where residential wood burning is common.

A Stage 1 burn ban disallows: burning in fireplaces or uncertified wood stoves; outdoor fires, including campfires and the use of fire pits. Violations are subject to a $1,000 penalty.

The use of natural gas, propane, pellet and EPA certified wood stoves or inserts is not restricted.
