Director leaves

Dominique Cantwell, executive director of Bainbridge Performing Arts, is stepping down from that post this fall.

She will be succeeded by Elizabeth Allum, BPA’s director of education.

Cantwell’s been at BPA for 13 years and will take on the role of emeritus upon completion of the renovation and expansion project at BPA/s Buxton Center in September.

Under Cantwell, artistic excellence flourished, the theatre school expanded, programs diversified and blossomed despite the COVID pandemic, the dream of constructing the Buxton Center became reality, and arts access is afforded to every member of the community through the Open Doors program.

“With BPA leading the way, municipal funding for the arts has been restored, the island’s non-profit sector has become a collaborative rather than competitive space, and community performance has become a badge of honor,” Cantwell said.

Compost bins

As part of its ongoing waste reduction effort, the city of Bainbridge Island recently installed bins to collect organic waste at various locations in downtown Winslow.

The new “Compost Only” containers can accept food waste, napkins, wooden utensils, pizza boxes and other natural fiber-based home compostable food containers.

The compost bins are located near: Town & Country Market, Isla Bonita, Chase Bank, Ba Sa, Emmy’s, Doc’s Marina Grill and City Hall.

Fatal crash

A Port Orchard motorcyclist was killed June 11 after police say he was hit head-on by a vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic.

The accident took place on Highway 3 west of Fair Harbor in Mason County at 5:06 p.m. A memo from the Washington State Patrol said a 34-year-old Allyn man was driving in the southbound lane before suddenly crossing into the other side of the road. The driver hit the victim head-on, sending him and his motorcycle in different directions, the memo says. The driver’s vehicle rolled on its top and came to rest in the northbound ditch.

The victim, identified as 35-year-old Kenneth M. Speers of Port Orchard, died at the scene.

The suspect was transported to Mason General Hospital for treatment before being booked into the county jail on a charge of vehicular homicide. Police alleged that drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the deadly collision.
