Body of missing diver found off Bainbridge Island

The body of missing diver David Scheinost was recovered just before 1:20 p.m. today, according to the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

The body of missing diver David Scheinost was recovered just before 1:20 p.m. today, according to the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

Scheinost went missing Tuesday in the waters off the south end of Bainbridge Island while working as a diver for the Department of Natural Resources.

A submersible, owned by Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, located the body of Scheinost, a 24-year-old from Puyallup, while searching the area he was last seen diving.

The family of Scheinost has been notified.

“I believe I speak for all rescue personnel involved when I say we are all very saddened by this tragedy,” said Bainbridge Police Commander Sue Shultz.

Bainbridge officials said the cause of the accident is still being investigated. Pierce County marine officers will be assisting with the further evaluation of the accident.

Representatives from the Bainbridge Island Police, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, the Navy, Coast Guard and volunteer divers spent three days searching for Scheinost.
