BISD shares safety tips as schools start up

With the Bainbridge Island School District back in session, more than 3,000 children are walking and biking to and from school on sidewalks and roads in the early morning and afternoon hours.

The district offers these tips to ensure their safety.

•Allow additional travel time, especially if traveling near schools 20 minutes before or after school.

•Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., the speed limit in school zones is 20 miles per hour. Speeders face a costly ticket.

•When a school bus stop paddle is activated, motorists and cyclists in both directions must stop. The fine for failure to stop is $422.

•Bicyclists must follow the rules of the road, including stopping at traffic lights and stop signs.

•The city requires that cyclists wear a helmet.

•Pedestrians must obey traffic signals and signs and must use sidewalks when available or walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.

•Vehicles must stop at intersections to allow pedestrians to cross within a marked or unmarked crosswalk, and a pedestrian crossing a roadway elsewhere must yield to vehicles.
