Over the 4th of July weekend, the Bainbridge Island Fire Department reported 38 calls for service, a slight decrease from last year’s 43 calls.
“There were no major fire incidents over the holiday weekend on the Island, which speaks to the awareness of the dry conditions and care that the public took during their celebrations. We really appreciate it! It will continue to be dry and we ask the community to remain vigilant to prevent fires this summer,” BIFD fire chief Jared Moravec said.
Over the holiday weekend, BIFD reported 25 EMS-related calls, four fire-related calls and nine other miscellaneous calls, including fire alarms, cancelled responses, etc., Moravec said.
Of the EMS-related calls, BIFD transported 10 patients to the hospital. Nine patients were transported to St. Michael Medical Center and one patient was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Moravec said.
Fireworks have been prohibited on BI since October 2020, when an ordinance went into effect. Violators can face civil penalties as well as seizure and disposal of fireworks, per city documents.
“The department always asks the community to celebrate safely over the holidays. In the summertime, be vigilant to prevent fires and also be sure to hydrate and stay cool during warmer temperatures,” Moravec said.
Harborview Medical Center reported 52 firework-related injuries over the holiday weekend, per a UW Medicine spokesperson.
