BI parks seeks input on skatepark changes

What would you like to see done at Strawberry Hill Skatepark?

The Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District is having a public meeting April 19 and also asking folks through an online survey at tinyurl.com/Bainbridge-Skatepark

The skatepark is being renovated and expanded, and the district wants input to help with the design.

The public meeting will be from 6-9 p.m. April 19 at Strawberry Hill Center. Grindline Skateparks of Seattle will present options and take input and ideas.

The skatepark will include a new “street skate” area with curbs, ledges, rails, stairs and other elements typical of an urban skating environment. The design will accommodate users of all ages and abilities, and more types of skating: skateboarding, roller and inline skating, and scooters.

The 20-year-old skate bowl, recognized as one of the best in the Northwest, will be refurbished as part of the project.

“The Strawberry Hill skate bowl has been popular and challenging for skateboarders since it was built,” said Jessica PerkinsMiller, chair of the skatepark committee. “Skating has evolved in that time, and street skating has become more popular. The park expansion will reflect these new forms and types of skating, and welcome more levels of skating ability.”

Grindline has built more than 300 skateparks around the world, including two dozen in Puget Sound.

The BI Parks Foundation will launch a fundraising campaign later this year as the skatepark design takes shape.
