BI hires 1st Sustainable Transportation coordinator

City manager Blair King has selected Hannah Boettcher as Bainbridge Island’s first Sustainable Transportation coordinator to help implement the 2022 Sustainable Transportation Plan and other mobility initiatives.

Boettcher will start her job in mid-September.

Boettcher previously served as a transportation demand management program manager at Jones Lang Lasalle in partnership with Amazon. She helped develop and manage various sustainable transportation programs, including an electric bike subscription program, carpooling and vanpooling programs, and incentive programs to promote mode shift in support of public health and climate action goals.

Boettcher has a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in environmental sustainability, and a master’s in urban and regional planning, both from the University of Michigan. She also serves as the Seattle Chapter Program chair for Young Professionals in Transportation.

“Efforts to help support the transition to electric vehicles, reduce vehicle miles traveled on the island, and improve our scores as a bicycle- and walk-friendly community will help enhance the overall sustainability and quality of life on Bainbridge Island,” King said of Boettcher’s upcoming efforts.

Boettcher will work closely with staff and community partners to develop and implement programs, such as Safe Routes to Schools and Bike to Work/School Day events and develop education and outreach materials and programs to promote walking, bicycling and transit ridership on BI. The position will also coordinate the city’s Commute Trip Reduction program.

During the 2023-24 budget process, the City Council added the coordinator position.
