BHS student starts magazine

She wants to share different cultures with BI

Sai Prakash, a Bainbridge High School student, is looking for student authors, artists and photographers to submit their work for inclusion in the inaugural issue of Bloom magazine.

“Bloom magazine is a student-led publication centered around themes of diversity, equality, social justice and climate change. Basically, all of the important issues that we’re facing right now,” Prakash said.

As a first-generation Indian-American whose parents immigrated from Bangalore, India, Prakash feels separated from her culture by living in an area that is predominantly white and, “People don’t really know much about other cultures on the island.”

Prakash is active in the Global Health Club, Social Justice League, the Earth Service Corps at BHS and the Multicultural Advisory Committee and was inspired to start the magazine to share stories and art about other cultures.

“I felt a responsibility to bring that to Bainbridge Island,” Prakash said.
