The Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal was evacuated Thursday evening and ferry service from the island to Seattle was delayed after two ferry travelers overheard a woman talking about bombs and knives.

The travelers reported the woman to ferry workers and 911 was called.

Bainbridge Police Chief Matthew Hamner said police talked to the woman who had reportedly made the bomb comments and searched her bags but found nothing. Dozens of travelers were quickly removed from the ferry terminal.

“We arrived, secured her backpacks and cleared the terminal,” Hamner said.

A Washington State Patrol bomb-sniffing dog was also brought in and the terminal was checked for explosives, but none were found.

Hamner said the woman’s comments were determined not to be threats and no crime was committed.

Hamner praised the police response and the travelers who called 911.

“The officers did a very good job of following protocol and putting a perimeter up, and getting the terminal clear,” Hamner said.

“They were right to call the police,” he added. “That’s exactly what we want people to do.”

The incident delayed the ferry MV Puyallup on the vessel’s 7:10 and 8:55 p.m. sailings from Bainbridge Island and the 8:10 p.m. sailing from Seattle Thursday.
