Matthew Hamner will be the next police chief for the city of Bainbridge Island, the city announced Friday.

Hamner, a resident of Indianapolis, Ind., currently works for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department as the chief’s executive officer. He has worked for the department since 1990.

During his 23-year career in law enforcement, he has served in numerous positions, including in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Neighborhood Resources Unit, Crime Prevention, School Resource Officer Unit and Community Affairs.

City Manager Doug Schulze said the hiring decision was a tough one to make.

Hamner was chosen after five finalists underwent a full day of interviews with four panels and meetings with Schulze on April 5.

“The input did not result in identification of one top candidate, which made the decision extremely difficult,” Schulze said.
