Individuals and organizations interested in contributing to a potential community radio station are invited to attend a public meeting at Waterfront Park Community Center at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Sustainable Bainbridge is working to develop an application for a low-power FM radio license to be submitted to the Federal Communications Commission for approval by Oct. 15.

If awarded, organizers said the radio signal would be able reach an estimated 80 percent of the island as well as include the ability to stream programs digitally on the internet so they could be available on computers, tablets and smart phones.

The proposal is one of many such plans being discussed around the country, following the January 2011 signing of the Local Community Radio Act by President Obama, which authorizes hundreds of new community radio stations on the regular FM radio band.

Sustainable Bainbridge writes in the meeting invitation that the “possibilities for a low-power radio station are endless. The low-power nature of the band-width means coverage will be provided basically only to Bainbridge Island.

In addition to serving the island community during an emergency, such as a power outage or other disaster, organizers said the radio station could include a wide range of program of general and specific community interest.”

Sustainable Bainbridge is currently seeking island organizations and residents who have an interest in providing program content as well as letters of support for the license application.
