BANK OF AMERICA ARENA, SEATTLE – The Franklin Quaker guard tandem of Venoy Overton and Peyton Siva were too much for the Bainbridge Spartans as they lost 73-64 in a battle of top ranked teams at the King Holiday Hoopfest at the Bank of America Arena on the University of Washington campus.

Both squads are ranked 1-2 respectively in the latest WashingtonRivals.com poll.

It was the first loss for Bainbridge this year.

The Spartans stuck with the quicker Quakers for the first half, then took the lead with 4:54 in the second quarter thanks to some tough drives from Nick Fling as he scored five points in a quick run.

A scary play occured when Gray landed hard on his back after he was fouled hard by Overton as he was going up for a dunk. He stayed on the ground for a few minutes, but was OK.

Bainbridge increased the lead to 33-24 on a tough baby skyhook by Austin Wood, but Franklin cut the lead to 35-28 at half.

In the third quarter, Overton came out on fire, scoring the first six points of the period to pull the Quakers within one.

Wood scored four in the paint and Gray scored and was fouled to push the lead back, but he missed the free throw.

The miss was uncharacteristic of Gray and Bainbridge, as they shot just 59 percent from the line.

Meanwhile Jody Johnson and Siva were able to get to the line to score six points. Siva later hit a three to pull Franklin within one, then converted on a three-point play to put them in the lead.

The two teams traded the lead eight times in a frantic eight minute stretch as both squads made tough shots.

But Franklin took the lead for good at about the 3:40 mark on another jumper from Siva.

Gray had a bucket, but split a pair of free throws for the last Spartan scores of the evening. The Franklin defense took over from there, keeping Bainbridge from getting a good look at the rim.

Steven Gray had 21 points and six rebounds while Coby Gibler had 19 points and 14 rebounds.

Fling had 10 points while Wood had six points and six rebounds.

Overton and Siva had 22 points. Siva was 11 of 11 from the line and Franklin shot 80 percent from the stripe.

The Spartans were just one of ten from behind the arc.

Franklin shot just 25 percent in the first half, but shot 41 percent in the second.

The Spartan girls lost to Roosevelt in the early morning game.

The Roughriders were up by 13 at halftime, but Brittany Gray and Caitlyn Salo did their best to pull them back.

Emily Farrar hit a three as the shot clock expired to pull them within four, but Roosevelt knocked down some big three point shots while the Roughriders dominated on the offensive glass by a count of 18 to 5.

Gray had 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Farrar had nine points.

Both teams play at Cleveland Wednesday.
