Bainbridge Island tops internet list of boring places

Married with kids = boring. And that makes Bainbridge Island the most boring city in Washington state.

Or so say the writers at RoadSnacks, an infotainment website that ranks cities and places across the country based on Census statistics.

In a recent RoadSnacks analysis, the website announced its top 10 list of places in Washington that are “total snoozefests.”

Bainbridge Island topped the list, largely due to the age of the island’s population, the number of married couples here and the number of houses with children.

With islanders having an average age of 48.2, and 63.4 percent of households occupied by married couples, and 31.6 percent of households having children, Bainbridge earned the dubious distinction of being the most boring place in the state.

One other city in Kitsap also made the list; Poulsbo, at number nine.

The other boring cities were:

2. Ocean Shores;

3. Edgewood;

4. Anacortes;

5. Normandy Park;

6. Ridgefield;

7. Gig Harbor;

8. Lynden;

9. Poulsbo; and

10. Mercer Island.

In the RoadSnacks article by Nick James — which is topped with the disclaimer, “This article is an opinion based on facts and is meant as infotainment. Don’t freak out.” — the Durham, North Carolina-based website said it fed Census data into “a complex algorithm” to create the list.

“Just like in all U.S. States, there are definitely some boring places within Washington’s borders,” James wrote. “You know the places: the ones where everyone has an AARP card and the most exciting thing they do all day is post a picture of their grandchild on Facebook. Like Bainbridge Island, for instance.”

The list was generated by using information from cities with populations of 5,000 or more.

The algorithm, James wrote, “factors in things we generally think make people exciting, and then we figure out which cities have the least number of those exciting people … Here are some of the things people tend to think of as making a city’s population boring:

Percentage of Population Over 35 (higher is more boring)

Percentage of Married Household (higher is more boring)

Average Age (higher is more boring)

Percentage of Households With Kids (higher is more boring)

Percentage of Households with People Over 65 (higher is more boring)

Population density (lower is more boring).”

The most exciting cities in Washington, according to the website? That would be Pullman, Cheney, Ellensburg, Bellingham and Seattle.

RoadSnacks is apparently not only an authority on the ho hum and humdrum. The website has also created lists of the worst neighborhoods in cities across the country, the “most redneck” cities in selected states, and the “most dangerous” cities.
