Bainbridge Island schools were closed for the day after homes and businesses went dark after an early morning power outage Thursday morning.

A powerful windstorm passed through the Puget Sound region early Thursday and caused multiple power outages across Kitsap County.

All of Bainbridge Island was without power; leaving banks and boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops closed.

The outage happened just before 5 a.m.

Some businesses were running on power from generators and remained open early Thursday, including Eagle Harbor Book Company and Bainbridge Pediatrics.

The Starbucks in the Safeway store on High School Road was open through the early morning hours, and the line of customers before 8 a.m. stretched more than 30 deep. The mood of the crowd was bemused and easy-going as people traded stories about whether or not they would go to work.

The Bainbridge Island School District cancelled classes in all of the public schools on the island early Thursday.

All streetlights were out across the island, leading to long queues on Highway 305 for drivers heading north and south.

Fallen trees and branches also prompted the closure of Manitou Beach Road between Murden Cove Drive and Falk Road early Thursday.

Puget Sound Energy estimated more than 50,000 customers were without power before 9 a.m.

PSE reported it had opened local storm bases to assist with getting power restored.

No estimate has been given for when power will be restored to Bainbridge.
