Bainbridge Island briefs

Drug take back

Bainbridge Island police will be part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day April 27 at the Farmers Market at Town Square from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Staff will collect unused, unneeded or expired prescription and nonprescription medicines. City manager Blair King’s weekly report says improper disposal of such medicines can lead to accidental poisoning, misuse or overdose, while proper disposal saves lives and protects the environment. Over 400 pounds of unwanted medicines were collected statewide in the last event in October.

Earth Day film

The Historic Lynwood Theatre will screen “Common Ground” on Earth Day April 22 at 7 p.m.

It features the “Regenerative Movement” that produces nutritionally dense food while balancing the climate. Cast includes Laura Dern, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover.

The feature-length film will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. Tickets are available at farawayentertainment.com

Weed seminar

“Pull your weeds, not your hair,” is a webinar that will be shown three times soon regarding eco-friendly ideas to keep your lawn healthy.

The first is April 20, followed by April 27, both from 10-11 a.m. and May 1 at 6-7 p.m.

The webinars were produced by West Sound Stormwater Outreach Group, a partnership between Kitsap County and the cities of Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Port Orchard, Poulsbo and others.

The agencies work together to improve water quality by reducing pollutants in stormwater runoff.

Stormwater grant

Kitsap County recently acquired a $250,000 grant from the state Department of Ecology.

The grant will be used to evaluate how stormwater influences road and public infrastructure flooding and basin capacity in the Point No Point Estuary in Hansville, per a county news release. The project focuses on quantifying stormwater and surface water effects under existing conditions as well as under estuary restoration conditions proposed by a study led by Mid Sound Fisheries.

The project will be coordinated with the county Parks Department’s beach and shoreline repair efforts at Point No Point Park.

The grant underscores the county’s “commitment to protecting public safety and welfare while sustaining a healthy natural environment,” said Andrew Nelson, Kitsap’s Public Works director.

Public Works will begin the project later this year with an estimated completion of early 2026.

BIMA events

Art Grice of Bainbridge Island will present a show of his 50 years of collecting images with his camera April 27 at 3 p.m. at BI Museum of Art. Tickets are $10-$12.

Tickets are the same price for a movie April 30 at 7 p.m. “Stranded Spirits” tells the story of some people who have recently died and in limbo. Counselors help them pick a memory to take with them to eternity. A short film is made of each memory, creating some of the most thoughtful cinematic moments in history, a news release states.

Poetry events

The culmination of National Poetry Month exhibits on Bainbridge Island will take place with Poetry Corners LIVE! May 4 at 5 p.m. at BI Museum of Art.

Poets who participated in monthlong events on BI will read from their works.

This month 46 poster-sized poems adorn windows of Winslow Way businesses and at the Bainbridge Public Library and ferry terminal. Poems of Hyla School students are at Town & Country Market. And 60 flags featuring haikus are above the deck at Plum, 124 Winslow Way E.

July 4 planning

Planning for Bainbridge Island’s The Grand Old 4th of July Celebration is underway.

The BI Chamber of Commerce is again hosting the effort. Registration is open for food and other vendors to participate in the Street Fair, along with the Hometown Parade.

Volunteers are also being sought to help put on the event.

Deadlines are already coming up for the Street Fair, June 3; and the parade, June 14.

Alliance expands

The Winery Alliance of Bainbridge Island is expanding to include businesses in other parts of Kitsap County.

The Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce newsletter says newcomers include State 42 Wines and Hard Hat Winery in Poulsbo; Olalla Winery and Vineyard in Olalla. Two wineries opening late this summer also are included: Telve di Sopra of Hansville and Finial Cellars in Poulsbo.

The existing BI members are: Bainbridge Vineyards; Eagle Harbor Wine Co.; Eleven Winery; Fletcher Bay Winery; Rolling Bay Winery; and Perennial Vintners.

The new Kitsap Winery Alliance will offer new programs, including a tasting passport for a flight at each winery. And it will still include the wine cruise around BI, which will take place July 27 this year.
