Fishing derby

The Bainbridge Island Sportsmen’s Club Annual Huck Finn & Becky Thatcher Kids’ Fishing Derby will take place April 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the club’s pond at 8203 Sportsman Club Road NE.

To celebrate the start of trout season, kids 14 and younger may fish for free with no license requirements. Prizes will be awarded for girls and boys, including first fish caught, most fish caught and biggest fish. A limited number of rigged bamboo fishing poles and worms will be provided. Fishing reels are not allowed during the derby, but may be used after it ends. Donations are welcome.

The club is celebrating its 94th year and has been at this location since 1939. Along with the derby it offers archery, pistol caliber and shotgun range facilities, safety classes, Bainbridge High School scholarships, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. For details go to www.biscwa.org.

Help veterans

It’s no secret that U.S. military veterans and their families often need more support than the government provides.

To help in that effort, the Kitsap County Veterans Advisory Board and many others are putting on a Stand Down for Veterans and their families from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22 at the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd. in Bremerton.

Planned services include: legal assistance; women’s, men’s and children’s clothing; hygiene items; groceries; haircuts; employment referrals; financial assistance; education services; camping gear; housing options; VA claim and benefit information; women veterans services; and more.

Donuts and coffee will be served starting at 10 a.m., with a hot meal at 11 a.m.

Veteran ID required for entry: DD214 discharge papers or VA, military, retired military, Reserve or National Guard ID. Unaccompanied family members must bring sponsor’s DD214 or proof of relationship.

School finalists

Bainbridge Island School District received three applications for the 1st District director position previously held by Lynn Smith, whose last meeting was April 7.

Interviews will be April 20 at 4:30 p.m. in the board room; it’s open to the public. The four current BISD directors will choose the appointee, who will be sworn in at the April 27 meeting.

Brianna Backlund is a veterinarian and owns Sound Veterinary Medicine Specialist on Bainbridge Island. Her two elementary-aged students attend BISD schools, where she actively volunteers.

Darkeim Brown served nearly 30 years in the U. S. Air Force and the Coast Guard. Darkeim has extensive volunteer experience, including as a youth mentor at the Washington Youth Academy.

Kelly Cancialosi is a corporate attorney and runs her own legal practice. Cancialosi and her family have lived on Bainbridge Island since 2012, and her son attends Sakai Intermediate School. Cancialosi serves on various PTO boards, and is Sakai PTO president.

IVC auction

Tickets go on sale April 20 for the Gather and Give Auction for Island Volunteer Caregivers that will take place June 8.

Tickets are discounted if purchased between April 20-May 19, although tickets are sold through May 24.

Live auction items include luxury getaways and locally curated experiences that will appeal to foodies, arts and culture patrons, gardeners, adventurers and sports fans. Guests will hear from people whose lives have been touched through IVC to serve neighbors facing challenges related to aging, disability or adversity. IVC will demonstrate how it is diving deeper to combat the No. 1 issue facing seniors on Bainbridge Island – loneliness and isolation.

The event is 5:30-9 p.m. at Kiana Lodge and will feature live music by Bischoff Trio during a champagne meet and greet followed by a salmon dinner and dessert dash. To register, visit ivcbainbridge.org or call IVC office at 206-842-4441.

Youth jobs

The Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce and Bainbridge Youth Services have joined forces to create Work Ready Bainbridge 2023.

The eight-week summer employment and workforce certification program connect local youth ages 16-24 to employers on BI.

WEAVE concerts

Freddy Fuego X-Tet will perform April 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Cost is $20, $25 the day of the show.

On April 29, WEAVE will present Jazz for Kids family matinee. Kids are free. Adults are $10, $15 the day of the show. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show starts a half-hour later.

Both concerts start at 7:30 p.m., but doors open an hour earlier. Both concerts are at Rolling Bay Hall on Bainbridge Island.

Treehouse concerts

The backup band for the Queen of Swing, Yvonne McAllister, will pay tribute to her at a concert at 6 p.m. May 7 at the Treehouse Cafe in Lynwood Center on Bainbridge Island.

The band, called Persistence, will play blues and jazz standards. Admission is free. Legendary guitarist for Supertramp Carl Verheyen will perform at 7:30 p.m. June 30. For details go to treehousebainbridge.com.

Fish program

Kim Kosa, development director for Wild Salmon Center, will speak at the Bainbridge Island Fly Fishers program at 7 p.m. April 25 at Seabold Hall, 14450 Komedal Road NE.

Kosa and the center work to protect and restore wild salmon and steelhead from the Pacific Northwest to Alaska, and work to remove 75 miles of blocked habitat on the Olympic Peninsula.

Choir concert

Amabile Choir, a mixed voice, Bainbridge Island choral group, presents delicate modulations and rich chords in its spring concert “United In Song.”

The 50-voice group will bring three full-choir events to BI, including one matinee with the Sakai Intermediate School choirs.

The concerts will be presented at Bethany Lutheran Church on Finch Road May 5-6 at 7:30 p.m.

Sakai choirs, under direction of Katie Gibbs, will join the Amabile Choir for a 3 p.m. performance May 6 at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church on Valley Road. These young singers will perform four pieces and join the Amabile choir for the song, “Where the Light Begins.”

Amabile is directed by Sylvia Cauter. It is celebrating its 10th anniversary and offers holiday and spring concerts each year.

Admission for any performance is $20. Tickets are available at www.amabilechoir.org.

Spring concert

Crescendo’s Spring Fling concert will take place at 7 p.m. May 8 at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church.

The concert at 11042 Sunrise Drive NE on Bainbridge Island is free, but donations are accepted.

Volunteers sought

Bainbridge Island has 32 openings for volunteers for its various city advisory groups.

Topics include: climate change, cultural funding, design review, environmental technical, ethics, historic preservation, lodging tax, planning, race equity and utility.

Applications are due by 4 p.m. May 17. Interviews are in late May. Terms begin July 1.
