No long dock

A citizens group has been successful in defeating a proposed 240-foot dock on Little Manzanita Bay.

Over 525 neighbors and Bainbridge Island residents joined Friends of Little Manzanita Bay over the three-year battle., executive director Cheryl Coon says in an email to The Review.

Foes of the dock wrote letters to the city, asking it not to approve the application. Volunteers staffed a table at the Farmers Market to educate the public and invite them to sign a petition. Wildlife biologists and marine ecologists documented the importance of Little Manzanita Bay to the survival of forage fish on which salmon depend and on the importance of the bay and feeder creek to the salmon that still run in it.

Friends will continue with new projects to “save” the bay, Coon said.

Pumpkin walk

Dress up in your Halloween costume and walk along a trail of hundreds of festive pumpkins at Bainbridge Gardens Pumpkin Walk this month.

The family-friendly event is held Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 pm, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. People are encouraged to paint a pumpkin to add to the collection on the trail. Donations benefit the Bainbridge Island Boys and Girls Club.
