Bainbridge Island briefs

Author in BI

Jon Mooallem of Bainbridge Island will launch his new book “Serious Face” at Eagle Harbor Book Co. on Winslow Way May 17.

The New York Times Magazine writer at large shares 13 hopeful, heartbreaking and profound essays from a master storyteller (Ed Yong) in the book. Publisher’s Weekly says he puts “a human face on larger issues such as climate change and conservation.”

The thread that combines the essays is that it’s “our vulnerability, not our victories, that connect us.”

In Serious Face he brings to life the desperate hopes and urgent fears of people he meets, telling stories with empathy, humor, insight and kindness, a news release says. “Can we learn to love the people we really are, behind the serious faces we show the world?”

Artists pop up

ROOST Flying Goat Studios will have its first Pop-Up event of the year May 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lynwood Center on Bainbridge Island.

Erica Nordean will be guest artist at Orellana Studio.

Peaceful Spring Designs will present whimsical ceramics by Dawn McNamara and contemporary jewelry by Theresa Killgore, whose work is now included in the Palm Spring Art and Architectural Museums.

Refreshments will be served. The location is 4565 and 4566 Flying Goat Ave. NE.
