Volleyball awards

Zariyah Franics of the Bainbridge Spartan volleyball team was named the Olympic League MVP, leading the team to league and district titles, along with a 7th-place finish at state, their highest finish since finishing 4th in 2006.

Spartan Kira O’Malley was named OL defensive player of the year. First-team OL honors were given to Bainbridge players Carmen MacCulloch, Cate Torrell, Rollins Anderson and Farrah Colby.

Sadie Engleson also received a sportsmanship award for Bainbridge.

Wyatt Way work

Construction continues to move forward along Wyatt Way, with several key components now taking shape.

Curb installation is complete between Ashbury Court and Weaver Road. Crews are now preparing this stretch for pouring ADA-compliant curb ramps and the paved bike path, per the city of Bainbridge Island. The eastern segment of storm drainage improvements between Weaver Road and Eakin Drive has been finished.

The connection to the existing water main at the west end of Wyatt Way is complete, and the new water main has now been extended to approximately the Finch Road intersection. PSE is relocating three utility poles near Finch Road, with this work expected to wrap up by the end of this week, per COBI.

Over the next few weeks, crews will continue progress on the water main replacement and storm drain system, with some potential for weather-related delays and schedule coordination with utility contractors.

Exchange zone

The Community Exchange Zone at the Ted Spearman Justice Center (8804 Madison Ave. N.) offers a secure, public location for private transactions. It serves as a more secure alternative to meeting on a front porch or street corner. The Exchange Zone is located across from the bike racks at the Justice Center and is well-lit and monitored by security cameras, per the city of Bainbridge Island.

Exchange Zones were established to address crimes involving fraudulent buyers or sellers and are also used for child custody exchanges. The site includes two designated parking spaces under continuous camera monitoring. Although located in the police parking lot, officers do not oversee or participate in transactions, per COBI.

Safety tips for using the Exchange Zone:

  • Bring a companion and keep your cell phone handy.
  • Schedule transactions during daylight hours.
  • Carry only the cash or items necessary for the exchange.
  • Trust your instincts—if something feels wrong, don’t go through with it.

If you become a victim of a crime, call 911 and report it immediately.

Farm manager

The city of Bainbridge Island is on the lookout for an individual or firm to take on the role of managing leased and commonly used portions of its publicly owned farmland. The city owns about 60 acres of farmland on the island. Out of these, 21 acres are currently leased by farmers.

The manager will have a range of responsibilities, including effective communication, coordination of shared resources, identifying and prioritizing repair and maintenance projects, and thorough documentation of the existing conditions, per COBI.

More information and a Request for Proposals are available on the city website. First review of applications will start Dec. 19.

The concert is intended for all ages, offering a diverse autumnal and holiday repertoire. The program features familiar classics, sweet ballads, and reimagined carols. Selections range from an upbeat tune celebrating the Jewish dreidel to seasonal favorites like “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “Silver Bells,” and even a zany, unexpected twist on “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

“We’ve curated a program with universal appeal,” said Wendi Olinger, director of Crescendo! “Whether you are 5 or 95, you will find a little something that sparks holiday joy and festive spirit.”

Crescendo! is led by Olinger, with accompaniment provided by Elizabeth Faye. The choir is composed of more than 30 local singers and operates under the umbrella of Ovation! Performing Arts Northwest, a Bainbridge-based nonprofit theater and performance group, the release says.
