Bainbridge Island briefs

Farm school

Brian MacWhorter, founder and head farmer at Butler Green Farms, recently launched the Butler Green Farms School in efforts to educate the next generation of farmers on Bainbridge Island.

Launching in September, the BGFS will partner with Bainbridge High School to offer a course in horticulture.

Across the country, approximately 40% of the farmland is owned by farmers over age 65. As farmers retire over the next 20 years, 350 million acres of farmland are expected to change hands, the release says.

“It’s a problem I lie awake at night thinking about regularly,” MacWhorter said. “I’ve dedicated my life to farming and I feel that I would be putting our community at a disadvantage if I didn’t share my experience with young people eager to make a difference.”

Farm-to-table dinner

Friends of the Farms will be holding a farm-to-table dinner at Winney Farm Aug. 15 at 5:30 p.m. for its annual celebration and auction.

The event brings together farmers, food lovers and community members in support of the land and the people who nourish it, a news release says. A locally sourced dinner will be served by Wanderlust NW Catering and live music will be performed by the Lori Dreier Band.

Tickets are $175 and can be purchased at friendsofthefarms.org/rsvp2025
