Nick Fling is perfect from the field as Spartans use defense to near perfection for win.
Nick Fling scored 18 points by going 8 for 8 from the field as the Bainbridge basketball team controlled O’Dea from the opening tip to the final horn, defeating the Fighting Irish 54-41 in front of a good-sized crowd Friday night.
In the first time the two teams have faced off since the 3A state championship game last March, the Spartans wasted no time in showing how much they wanted this game by going on an 8-0 run to open the game.
Mike Walsh scored four points while Fling dropped in two and Jimmy Baggett – getting his first start of the season – scored the opening bucket to start the game.
After Johri Fogerson bricked on a dunk, Davis came back to knock down a three pointer.
The Irish closed the gap to three early in the second quarter but Jesse Powell knocked down a three and Fling converted a three-point play to end any chance of O’Dea taking the lead.
Bainbridge held the Irish to one field goal in the third quarter and just four points overall.
Fling added six rebounds, two assists and a steal while Davis scored 13 points.
It’s the third straight year the Spartans have beaten the Irish at home.
The Spartans (5-3, 7-6) play Cleveland next Tuesday.
In the early contest, the girls basketball team lost a tough game 66-64 to Holy Names in overtime.
After losing the lead late in the fourth, Brittany Gray knocked down two free throws with .1 left on the clock to force overtime.
But while both teams had trouble scoring, Bainbridge struggled with the Cougars’ press and had a hard time getting a consistent offense going.
Gray had 20 points and 15 rebounds while Emily Farrar added 16 points.
Anna Wood had 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Spartans (5-3, 7-4) take on Cleveland next Wednesday.
