MLK day of service
After a three-year pandemic hiatus, the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District and its partners are again hosting Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at Blakely Harbor Park.
The event Jan. 16 is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes working on conservation tasks for all ages.
MLK march
The Young People’s March for Peace and Kindness is back Jan. 16 for Martin Luther King Jr. day.
Children, their families and community members are invited to gather for letter writing between 10:30-11:15 a.m. in the Commodore Commons, 9530 High School Road.
Write a letter to a leader asking them to work for peace or thanking them for the work they are already doing. At 11:15 a.m. they will march to the Winslow post office to mail our letters. Bring signs, banners and your own stamps. Addresses will be provided.

Open House
An Open House at City Hall will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 on the $5.8 million in non-motorized improvements at Eagle Harbor Drive-Wyatt Way.
Bainbridge Island Public Works Department officials will discuss and solicit feedback on the design of the project.
Attendees will learn about the scope, schedule and budget.
Winslow Subarea
Bainbridge Island officials want the public to be able to be informed about the Winslow Subarea Plan.
The plan includes sections on housing, open space and trails, public facilities, transportation, utilities and capital facilities.
Three public meetings also will take place starting in February to get input.

Chilly Hilly
The annual Chilly Hilly bicycle ride returns to Bainbridge Feb. 26.
People can sign up for the 33-mile ride starting Jan. 10.
The event goes from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Riders can start at the ferry dock in Seattle or the BI Community Center.
The ride is a fundraiser for the Cascade Bicycle Club, which provides community rides, and bicycle education and advocacy. Go to cascade.org for details.
2 concerts
WEAVE Presents the Thomas Marriott Quartet at Rolling Bay Hall on Bainbridge Jan. 14 and Beleza! Jan. 21.
Jazz trumpet player, Thomas Marriott is a veteran of the national jazz scene who’s earned eight Golden Ear awards, produced 13 albums as a leader for Origin Records, and toured with greats like Maynard Ferguson.
Beleza! is the duo of Northwest jazz artists guitarist John Stowell and flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny,brought together by a shared passion for bossa nova and samba.
Doors open at 6:30 with shows starting an hour later. General admission is $25. For tickets go to weavepresents.org.
$400K donated
Kitsap Bank, based in Port Orchard, will donate over $400,000 to local nonprofits in 2023.
The nonprofits are vested in education and youth, environment and sustainability, arts and culture, homelessness and food insecurity, economic and business development, and more. The bank serves Kitsap, Jefferson, Clallam, Pierce and King counties. Its employees also volunteer to help the nonprofits.
Previous supported organizations in Kitsap include: Admiral Theatre, Great Peninsula Conservancy, Holly Ridge Center, Kitsap Mental Health Services, Kitsap Small Business Development Center, Meals on Wheels, the Coffee Oasis, and more.
The bank has invested $2.3 million in the past five years. Established in 1908, it operates 18 locations in Western Washington.
$100K in scholarships
Nearly $100,000 in scholarships are available to high school seniors and other Kitsap residents seeking financial help with higher education.
Kitsap Community Foundation provides the funds through 20 programs established by donors and partners.
Application deadlines vary, but most close Feb. 28. Students learn if they get one this spring.
Foundation CEO Tina O’Brien said funds can go toward vocational or trade school, community or four-year college, or a graduate program. Some are renewable for up to four years.

100-mile run
The 3rd Annual BURT 100-mile Endurance Run returns to Bainbridge Island Feb. 11 at 8 a.m.
Five have already signed up for the 100 miler, with 30 running in the 55-kilometer event.
The 35-mile trail loop starts at Battle Point then goes to Lost Valley, Gazzam Lake, Blakely Harbor and Fort Ward. Aid stations for participants will be at Battle Point, Lynwood Center, Blakely Harbor and Springridge Road.
The event raises money for Bainbridge Parks & Trails Foundation.

Wage increase
The minimum wage statewide has gone up 9% to the highest in the nation at $15.74 an hour for those age 16 and older.
That’s an increase of $1.25 an hour. State law allows workers ages 14 and 15 to be paid 85% of that, or $13.38 an hour.
Trail planning
A North Sound to Olympics Trail Planning Open House will take place in person and online Jan. 24.
Kitsap County Public Works will present a feasibility analysis starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Village Green Community Center, 26159 Dulay Road NE, Kingston.

Singers sought
Crescendo, a group that sings a mix of pop, Broadway, jazz and standards will start a new 12-week session Jan. 30.
Rehearsals are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays at Ovation Studio, 600 Ericksen Ave., Suite 103.
Cost is $99.
Crescendo will sing in concert May 8 at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church with other performances this spring as well.
