Bainbridge briefs

Great Decisions

Beginning March 3, the community is invited to learn about and weigh in on five of the most important foreign policy issues facing the United States today: March 3 – The High Seas Treaty; March 10 – Climate Technology; April 7 – The Future of NATO; April 21 – Indonesia; and April 28 – Economic Warfare.

The discussions take place from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Bainbridge Public Library. All events are free, with donations appreciated. Refreshments are provided.

Now in its 18th year, Great Decisions at the Library is part of a nationwide, nonpartisan program of the Foreign Policy Association intended to broaden public involvement in foreign affairs. Participants view a 25-minute association video on the topic and then engage in a discussion led by a moderator. A Briefing Book, published by the association, is also available.

Kitchen fire

A kitchen sustained serious damage after a pan left on the stove burst into flames but an occupant’s efforts to snuff the fire helped prevent further spread through a home near Suquamish Feb. 23.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, and the Bainbridge Island and Poulsbo fire departments were called to the 1,000-square-foot single-story home off of Ditto Lane shortly after 2 p.m. Suquamish police reported the fire out with all occupants evacuated. NKF&R’s duty chief, Battalion 81, arrived in just over eight minutes and found smoke still issuing from the structure. Crews searched for hot spots and used fans to remove smoke from the home.

A resident told firefighters that, upon discovering the flames, they alerted the rest of the home’s four adult occupants to evacuate while one remained behind to squelch the growing flames using a fire extinguisher and a garden hose.

The Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed the fire cause was accidental and cooking-related.

Art awards

Bainbridge High School juniors and seniors are eligible for cash awards from the Bainbridge Island Studio Tour.

For outstanding work in visual arts, a grand prize of $400, first place of $250, and two $100 honorable mention cash prizes will be awarded. Now in its 10th year, the Youth Art Award is funded by voluntary donations from the 2023 Studio Tour artists.

The deadline is March 31. Applications can be found online at www.bistudiotour.com

Gaza signs

The public is invited to make Signs for a Ceasefire in Gaza from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. March 3 across from the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art on Winslow Way.

Deets meets

Bainbridge Island Mayor Joe Deets will meet with constituents to talk about city business from 10 a.m. to noon March 2 at CUPS Espresso, 123 Bjune Drive SE in Winslow.

Primary ballots

Kitsap County voters should have received ballots for the 2024 Presidential Primary by now.

Unlike other elections, to vote in the Presidential Primary in Washington a voter must choose a party preference, then on the ballot select a candidate from that party. When ballots are returned the ballots are separated by party preference, and then processed as two separate elections.

Each ballot packet will have voting stickers designed by Steve Johnson and Brian Carlisle of Bremerton and Barbara Roberts of Poulsbo.
