Glass art gift

Ordway Elementary School’s graduating fourth-graders spent the afternoon of June 16 at BARN creating a Mesolini Glass Studio-designed butterfly, signifying transformation and flight.

Each student is represented by a piece of glass that merges into the winged frame of the large-scale butterfly. The community will be able to pose between the butterfly wings, providing years of interactive visual and photo opportunities.

As the students take flight, they leave behind this art installation as a reminder of their transformative time at Ordway, a news release says.

Escape room

Winslow has a new entertainment option with Bainbridge Escape – The Mystery of History at 440 Winslow Way.

The interactive room brings a historically relevant story to life. It revolves around David Caplan, fugitive from the 1910 Los Angeles Times bombing, which killed 21 people. Can you catch him and bring him to justice in 60 minutes?

Motorcyclist dies

A 45-year-old Hansville man died early June 22 after crashing his motorcycle into a cable barrier on Highway 3.

Michael Sooto was traveling northbound on Highway 3 just south of Finn Hill Road at a high rate of speed before his motorcycle left the roadway and struck a cable barrier, a Washington State Patrol news release states. He died at the scene.

WSP lists the cause of the crash as speeding too fast for conditions.

Workforce training

The state legislature recently pledged $41 million to expand Bremerton’s West Sound Technical Skills Center for the first time since the 1970s.

It is a commitment to improving workforce training in Kitsap County.

The capital project provides an opportunity to increase the school’s number of instructors, increase enrollment by approximately 45% and expand training for young people to enter construction, manufacturing, childcare, healthcare, automotive repair, cosmetology, the culinary arts and more.

Rolfes sworn in

After 16 years in the state legislature, Sen. Christine Rolfes (D-Bainbridge Island) officially announced June 20 she is stepping down from the Senate after submitting a resignation letter to Gov. Jay Inslee.

Her announcement came the same day she was sworn in as a Kitsap County commissioner after being appointed last month. Her resignation from the Senate is effective Aug. 15. Rolfes’ four-year Senate term that began in January 2021 will be filled by a temporary appointee, who will serve through the 2024 election. The appointee will be chosen by the county commissioners from a list of three names submitted by the district’s precinct committee officers.
