FRIDAY, MAY 6

6:47 a.m. Police responded to a trespassing complaint at the Bainbridge Island School District transportation center on New Brooklyn Road.

A 29-year-old homeless man was encamped nearby, despite having been previously told to leave just two weeks before.

Though the man had apparently cleaned up his camp, a baseball coach had complained of somebody in the woods and so a school district employee had gone to investigate. He found the man’s camp near the previous location and said it had “grown significantly.”

Police were unable to locate the homeless man, though the contents of the encampment were “very disturbing.” They observed feces, condoms, broken glass, crushed beer cans and piles of garbage scattered around the 15-foot-by-40-foot area, as well as many other loose sharp items. The entire area smelled awful.

There was also a handicapped toilet seat that had been set up and used as a toilet, and a sleeping bag, an inflatable bed and a tent.

The homeless man has refused services and support as previously offered by Bainbridge police, is not employed and has six prior criminal convictions, including theft and possession of marijuana, all on Bainbridge Island. A warrant for his arrest was issued.
