Bainbridge blotter | Man vs. bus

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

THURSDAY, JULY 27

3:18 p.m. A 61-year-old Bainbridge Island man came to police, complaining that Kitsap Transit bus drivers were behaving dangerously during ferry offload times.

Earlier in the week, the man said, he’d been coming off the ferry from Seattle and, while northbound on Olympic Drive on foot, been struck by a Kitsap Transit bus in a crosswalk. He said he’d held up his right hand to signal the bus driver, but the bus did not stop and struck his hand, which was now bruised. He said he’d banged on the side of the bus as it passed, but still it did not stop.

He said the driver may have been unaware of the incident.

The man argued that the drivers are not properly trained, and their “egregious behavior” is endangering pedestrians. Police suggested he request a traffic emphasis patrol, but the man said “anything other than a plain clothes officer would be ineffectual.”

He said he had called Kitsap Transit, but had heard nothing back.

Bainbridge police called Kitsap Transit, and a representative said they’d be happy to speak to the man. Another driver of theirs, reportedly, had seen the crosswalk incident he’d spoken of, and said the man had closed the distance purposely to give the impression the bus driver was being reckless.

When police contacted the man again to relay the response from Kitsap Transit, the man said he would instead be recording videos of future instances of reckless bus driving and posting them on YouTube so as to gain public support.
