Bainbridge announces five finalists for planning director

The city of Bainbridge Island announced its five finalists for the job of planning director Wednesday, and all five have experience working in Washington state.

The city of Bainbridge Island announced its five finalists for the job of planning director Wednesday, and all five have experience working in Washington state.

They are:

• Patricia Charnas, a former senior planner in land use for Kitsap County and currently the county’s Division Manager of Planning and Environmental Programs;

• Gary Christensen, the administrator/manager of Skagit County Planning and Development Services;

• Hal Hart, planning director for the city of Anchorage, Alaska and the former development services director for Woodinville;

• Jacqueline Reid, the Long Range Planning Division Supervisor for Snohomish County; and

• David Sherrard, a senior project manager for Parametrix, a Seattle-based engineering, planning and environmental sciences consultant firm. Sherrard has also been a senior planner for the city of Bellevue.

Each of the candidates will undergo a two-day interview process on Monday, Feb. 22 and Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Islanders are invited to a meet-and-greet with the finalists from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22 at city hall.

Each candidate will give a short presentation of their professional background and achievements. Community members will have the opportunity to informally talk with the finalists following their presentations.

The following day, the candidates will participate in three different interview panels.

City Manager Doug Schulze will eventually make the final hiring decision.

The new planning director will replace Kathy Cook, who retired from the position in January.

Joe Tovar, the city’s consultant on the rewrite of Bainbridge’s comprehensive plan, is serving as interim director.
