As bond looms, BISD to hold open houses, tours at Wilkes

The Bainbridge Island School District is in its final push to get 60 percent of the island’s voters casting ballots on Nov. 3 to approve the second coming of its $42 million bond measure.

Three public events will be held during the next three weeks in an effort to inform the public about the new measure and three studies the district commissioned after voters defeated a similar measure on May 19.

The thrust of the measure – essentially the same as the one voters narrowly defeated – is construction of a new Wilkes Elementary School for $32 million.

The district would use $9 million for “essential and immediate” repair and renovation of other schools, including items such as roofing; heating, ventilation and electrical upgrades; and site safety and improvements.

The remaining $1 million would be used for energy-saving and sustainable renovations throughout the district.

During June and July, the district hired independent professionals and building industry experts to conduct three sudies to answer why the bond measure is on the ballot again.

The process for analyzing Wilkes replacement costs began in June.

In mid-July, two cost-estimating firms turned over their findings to a volunteer panel of Bainbridge professionals in the design and building construction industry.

Facilitator Rick Walsh said the panel’s consensus was: “The best possible job has been done in trying to estimate the costs, at this point.”

The open houses and tours will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 6; 5-5:30 p.m. Oct. 14 and 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Wilkes.
