Boy Scouts to recycle trees Jan. 9

Real Christmas trees are biodegradeable, which means they can be recycled for mulch or compost.

Two Boy Scout troops will pick up your trees on Bainbridge Island Jan. 9. Suggested donation is $20-$25. Register online at treerecycle.net

Trees can be recycled at Bainbridge Island Transfer Station, 7215 Vincent Road, for $5; Olmsted Tree Farm, 17526 Clear Creek Rd. NW in Poulsbo, Jan. 2-3 and 9-10, $5; and at Olympic Organics in Kingston, 7890 NE Ecology Rd., starting Jan. 4, $5 or fee waived with food bank donation.

You can compost your tree by cutting up smaller branches and adding them to your compost pile. Or you can cut your branches down and put them in your curbside waste container.

When recycling paper or cardboard, be sure to flatten them and remove bows and ribbons. Lowe’s and Ace Hardware accept used Christmas lights. If you can reuse it, do it. Hang on to Styrofoam for one of two collection events a year at Bay Hay & Feed on Bainbridge Island.

Testing site closed for New Year

The Bainbridge Island COVID-19 testing site will be closed Dec. 28 to Jan. 4 to allow its volunteers to have a week off.

It will also give staff time to inventory test site supplies and prepare for testing in 2021.

As of Dec. 11, the city’s site has tested 631 people, and there were nine positive results (less than 1.5 percent rate).
